Skeleton Coast - Namibia // 24

>> lundi, août 31, 2009

We really enjoyed our time in the desert, but Namibia is full of great landscape, so ... we let the Namib-Naukluft park behind us to join the coast, towards the cities of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund. Come back to the civilization.

Sunset on the Saltworks of Walvis bay, full of pelicans and Flamingos.

After a cold night in Walvis bay, direction to Swakop and stop to play a bit in the dunes with Quad.

Swakopmund Beaches ...
With Pelicans ...
Swakopmund streets ...

One day in Swakopmund to do Quad in the dunes, see pelicans and after 1 day and 1 night in the coast, we decided to sleep in the mountain, on the Moon landscape to have a warmer night than in Walvis bay. It was really cold along the coast.

Moon landscape...
Great view for lunch time.

Our friend, the bird ...
Dolerite dikes (in black on the pictures).

We combined the visit of the Moon landscape with the visit of the Welwitschia Drive. The Welwitschia mirabilis plant has only two leaves and can live for over a thousand years. It is found in parts of Namibia and Angola.

Welwitschia Drive ...

The coastline of Namibia is provocatively named the Skeleton Coast due to the high density of shipwrecks and low survival rate of those stranded here.

Skeleton Coast ... A short walk on the beach.

Cape Cross. Cape Cross is well-known for its colony of Cape Fur Seals. The smell and the number of seals, was just incredible. Fantastic.

And now direction to the DAMARALAND and KAOKOLAND, up north Namibia.
